If You Oppose the Southern Poverty Law Center You Must Be a Hater

The paranoid conspiracy theorists of the radical left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center have struck again. Now they’re labeling  social conservative organizations as ”hate groups.” It’s nonsense of course, but it’s the way the SPLC does business.
For example, the Center is attacking the National Organization for Marriage as a hate group because it opposes same sex marriage.
As the Washington Post reports:
Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, objected to his organization’s inclusion in the center’s report and said the notion that groups opposed to same-sex marriage are equivalent to racists is wrong.
“This is about protecting marriage. This isn’t about being anti-anyone,” Brown said. “The whole idea that somehow those folks who stand up for traditional marriage … are hateful is wrong. [The law center is] trying to marginalize and intimidate folks for standing up for marriage and also trying to equate them somehow to the KKK.”
NOM’s actual position on the issue of same sex marriage is arguably libertarian. The group believes that “Gays and Lesbians have a right to live as they choose,” NOM says on its website, “[but] they don’t have the right to redefine marriage for all of us.”
This may be a position the SPLC and others may not agree with, but it certainly doesn’t sound like “hate,” does it?
Incorrectly described by the Washington Post as a civil rights group, the SPLC is arguably a hate group itself. Although some of the extremist groups it tracks (such as the Ku Klux Klan) are actual hate groups, the Center has an annoying habit of lumping neo-Nazis in together with mainstream conservatives.
The Center puts together all sorts of groups on America’s political right together, labeling them enemies of the Republic. Conservative, libertarian, anti-tax, immigration reductionist and other groups are all viewed as legitimate targets for vilification. To the SPLC, you practice “hate” whenever you fail to genuflect with politically correct reverence before every human difference.
It’s this kind of intolerance that has long characterized the Southern Poverty Law Center.
