Ex-Afghanistan president Burhanuddin Rabbani killed by 'turban bomb' NY Daily NewsAh yes, Taliban, Obama's would-be peace partners but they won't have anything to do with our assclown in chief.
The former president of Afghanistan - a major figure who was leading peace talks aimed at ending the war - was killed in his home Tuesday by a suicide attacker wearing an exploding turban.
Burhanuddin Rabbani died when he hugged his assassin, who triggered the bomb, officials said.
The slaying threatened to destroy fragile hopes of ending the Afghan war with a negotiated settlement.
President Obama, who had a previously scheduled meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the Waldorf Hotel soon after the news broke vowed the "senseless act of violence" would not derail plans to end the war.
"We both believe that despite this incident that we will not be deterred from creating a path whereby Afghans can live in freedom, safety, security and prosperity," Obama said.
Karzai, who was in town to address the United Nations, cut his trip short and was heading home to deal with the fallout from the assassination.
Rabbani, a former college professor who fought the Soviets in the 1980s as a major Tajik warlord, served as Afghanistan's president in the 1990s.
Karzai named him chairman of the High Peace Council last year to develop a framework for peace.
He died along with four other council members when two Taliban sympathizers set off the attack in his home in Kabul, police said.
